Wu-Shin News Lessons from the dojo

Finally we've got a book coming out - covering all those great life lessons learned in the dojo with Lao Tze...

Discover the wise words and life lessons gleaned from Sensei as he uses everyday dojo practice to encourage his students to learn and grow. Polished Steel recounts entertaining and amusing tales and lessons that have been learned by a range of students from different backgrounds, each of whom discovered some humility from their experience, but learned important life lessons at the same time.

Martial arts teaches more than just defense, it teaches humility, respect, and strength. This book is a collection of stories from the dojo featuring various students as they learn lifelong lessons.

Written with style and humour, Polished Steel will have you laughing and smiling while nodding in agreement throughout. Delve inside, learn something new and leave your ego with your shoes, at the door…

Join Mary, Edmund, Simon, and other students in the dojo as they learn important life lessons from their Sensei. There are no shortcuts in life and training with Sensei provides the tools to traverse it. This collection of stories beautifully illustrates these teachings through simple but effective lessons that you can use in your own life.

The stories in this book, with an accompanying haiku, cover many of the principles of several martial arts, as well as body, mind, spirit and life-lessons. In fact, it is likely that there will be something for everyone to learn inside.

Wu-Shin News Get Bob independently mobile

Shaz is championing a fund raiser for the month of May to raise money to get Bob independently mobile after his stroke last September.

If you have appreciated Bob's teachings in the past and would like to ensure he can continue to follow his passion of imparting knowledge to others - we'd appreciate a small donation to bring this closer to reality and enable Bob to move about independently to classes and local medical appointments.

The options include buying a mobility scooter (suitable ones starts at around $4,000) and / or sealing the gravel driveway and parking area (quotes are around $20,000 - but can be reduced by just sealing a strip along the drive) to get Bob able to get himself out and about without aid.

Wu-Shin News It's Saturday morning

Warren SempaiIt’s Saturday morning, and the final class of 2013. We’re about to do a mind-numbing total of 2,028 kicks and kizami tsuki – 1,014 on the left and 1,014 on the right hand side.

I had awoken stiff and sore, wondering how on earth I was going to manage this class. When Tahmid Sempai took me aside to ask how I was feeling, I said: “I’m going to try, and will adjust as soon as I start to feel discomfort in the lower back.”

The discomfort came at kick number 277, and I told myself I was well within my right to apply Dojo Kun number two. But how could I?

Wu-Shin News Spring Fast 2013

Spring cleanThe regenerative energy of growth and rebirth in spring is the perfect time for a personal "spring clean" – which is why we will once again be holding our annual Wu-Shin Chi-Dao SPRING FAST over four weeks during September.

The idea is to fast for a total of 36-hours, one day a week, for four weeks.

How it works

You choose one day of the week for your fast. Your fast starts on the evening (after your normal evening meal) preceding your chosen day and continues until the morning of the day after your elected day. You repeat this for a total of four weeks.

Wu-Shin News Successful Japan Day 2013

We extend our thanks to everyone for their interest in our stand and for dropping by at the Canterbury Japan Day on Sunday.

We had a busy, if somewhat hectic weekend. So hectic that Shaz forgot to pack the camera on Sunday... but - the good news is that Teddy caught the first bokuto kata on video.

Wu-Shin News Canterbury Japan Day - 3 March

WSCDoldlogoWe're at the Canterbury Japan Day at Riccarton Racecourse, in Christchurch, on Sunday, 3 March. Pop in and say hello or catch our Tenshindo demonstration at 12:15 (based on the classical martial art of the samurai - tenshin shoden katori shinto ryu). There's a lot happening, including these demonstrations. Hope to see you there!

Tenshindo, based on the classical koryu bujutsu art of Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu Heiho Jutsu – the 560+ year-old Martial Art of the Japanese Samurai – embraces the actual training strategies, tactics, techniques, physical and mental conditioning methods used by the Samurai warriors to prepare themselves for battlefield as well as one-on-one mortal combat.

For more information about us and Tenshindo, read our FAQs, contact Bob Davies or join us on the Tenshindo Japanese Sword Facebook page.
